Dal Palak

Dal Palak or Spinach Dal is a very simple yet delicious Indian dish made with lentils, spinach, and seasoned with some spices. This is a part of North Indian cuisine, that goes well with roti,phulka, naan or with hot steamed rice.






Ingredients

2 cups finely chopped palak/spinach

1/4 cup chana dal/Bengal gram dal

1/4 cup Moong dal/Split yellow lentil

2 finely chopped tomatoes

2 chopped green chillies

2 tbsp ghee

Pinch of hing/asafoetida

1/2 tsp jeera/cumin seeds

1/2 tsp turmeric/Haldi powder

1/3 tsp red chilli powder

1/2 tsp coriander /dhaniya powder

1/2 inch ginger grated

1/2 tsp garam masala

2 red chillies

Salt to taste



Procedure

  • Wash chana dal and soak in water for one hour. After one hour drain all the water.

  • Wash moong dal. Put both dals in the cooker with 2 cups of water.1/2 tsp turmeric powder and a little salt.

  • After one whistle, lower the flame and cook it for 3 minutes, and turn off the flame.

  • Heat ghee in a pan, add jeera, hing,haldi,dhaniya powder, and grated ginger.

  • Saute for a minute, add chopped tomato and red chilli powder. Fry it till oil leaves the sides of the pan.

  • Once the masala is cooked add finely chopped palak, a pinch of salt, and garam masala powder.

  • Add half a cup of water and cook till palak is cooked.

  • Once it is cooked add the cooked dal and give a good mix. Let it boil for another 5-10 minutes.

  • Turn off the flame and your dal palak is ready.

  • Heat 2 tsp ghee in a pan, add 1/4 tsp cumin seeds, one red chilli and 1/4 red chilli powder. Saute for a second and immediately pour it on the prepared dal. This will enhance the flavour of the dal.

  • Serve hot dal with hot phulkas.
