Dal Palak or Spinach Dal is a very simple yet delicious Indian dish made with lentils, spinach, and seasoned with some spices. This is a part of North Indian cuisine, that goes well with roti,phulka, naan or with hot steamed rice.
Ingredients
2 cups finely chopped palak/spinach
1/4 cup chana dal/Bengal gram dal
1/4 cup Moong dal/Split yellow lentil
2 finely chopped tomatoes
2 chopped green chillies
2 tbsp ghee
Pinch of hing/asafoetida
1/2 tsp jeera/cumin seeds
1/2 tsp turmeric/Haldi powder
1/3 tsp red chilli powder
1/2 tsp coriander /dhaniya powder
1/2 inch ginger grated
1/2 tsp garam masala
2 red chillies
Salt to taste
Procedure
Wash chana dal and soak in water for one hour. After one hour drain all the water.
Wash moong dal. Put both dals in the cooker with 2 cups of water.1/2 tsp turmeric powder and a little salt.
After one whistle, lower the flame and cook it for 3 minutes, and turn off the flame.
Heat ghee in a pan, add jeera, hing,haldi,dhaniya powder, and grated ginger.
Saute for a minute, add chopped tomato and red chilli powder. Fry it till oil leaves the sides of the pan.
Once the masala is cooked add finely chopped palak, a pinch of salt, and garam masala powder.
Add half a cup of water and cook till palak is cooked.
Once it is cooked add the cooked dal and give a good mix. Let it boil for another 5-10 minutes.
Turn off the flame and your dal palak is ready.
Heat 2 tsp ghee in a pan, add 1/4 tsp cumin seeds, one red chilli and 1/4 red chilli powder. Saute for a second and immediately pour it on the prepared dal. This will enhance the flavour of the dal.
Serve hot dal with hot phulkas.
