Bangda / Mackerel Pulimunchi

Pulimunchi is very popular in and around Mangaluru, South Kanara District. As the name itself says it is a tangy, spicy fish curry, which tingles your taste buds. You can substitute mackerel with chicken or prawns. this spicy curry goes well with hot boiled rice.


Ingredients


4 nos Mackerel fish

8 garlic cloves crushed

2 sprigs of fresh curry leaves

1/2 tsp turmeric powder

Salt to taste

3 tbsp coconut oil


For the masala paste:

8 Byadgi red chillies soaked in warm water for 10 mins

1 tsp coriander seeds/ Daniya

1/2 tsp jeera/ cumin seeds 5 methi/ fenugreek seeds

1/4 tsp mustard seeds

Gooseberry size tamarind

Dry roast Daniya, jeera, methi, mustard and grind it with soaked red chillies, tamarind into a fine paste




Procedure

  • Heat oil in a pan, curry leaves, and crushed garlic in the oil till you get a nice aroma

  • Now add the ground paste and fry until oil leaves the sides of the pan

  • Add salt to taste, place the cleaned fish pieces, little water and cook till the fish is cooked

  • Serve hot with rice, idli or dosa.
