Dal Makhni

Dal Makhni is a classic Indian dish made with whole urad dal, rajma, butter and spices. It is one of the most popular lentil dishes that originated in the Punjab region of India and Pakistan. Dal refers to lentils and Makhni translates to buttery. Dal makhani literally means Buttery Dal.







Ingredients

1/2 cup whole black gram (sabut urad)

2 tbsp red kidney beans(rajma)

4 tsp oil or butter

1 tsp jeera

1/2 tsp Haldi powder

2 grated or blended tomato

1/2 tsp garam masala

1 tsp chilli powder

2 green chillies chopped

1/2 tsp chopped ginger

1 tsp chopped garlic

1/4 cup milk

Salt to taste

2 tsp butter

coriander leaves




Procedure


  • Soak urad and rajma for 5 hours in water and cook in a cooker with 2 cups of water

  • In a pan take butter or oil and put jeera, ginger, garlic, green chillies and fry

  • Add onion and fry till turns to pinkish

  • Put tomatoes, Haldi and fry

  • Add all spices and fry

  • Now pour the cooked urad and rajma with salt and make it boil till the gravy becomes thick.

  • Add milk and boil again for 2-3 minutes. Add the butter and give a nice mix, turn off the flame.

  • Garnish with little butter or cream and coriander leaves.

  • Serve hot with roti, naan,phulkas or ghee rice.
