Chana dal khichdi is a simple and flavorful traditional variant of khichdi from Punjab cuisine. This khichdi is made with a handful of ingredients - basmati rice, Bengal gram (chana dal), and some spices. Make this delicious and healthy khichdi for a quick and comforting meal with a side of raitha or yogurt and pickle.
Ingredients
1 cup rice
1/2 cup chana dal/ Bengal gram
3 to 4 tbsp oil
2 tsp jeera/ cumin seeds
4-5 slit green chillies
2 red chillies
2 onions roughly chopped
1 inch ginger chopped
6 garlic cloves chopped
2 finely chopped tomatoes
Few curry leaves
1/2 tsp turmeric powder/haldi
1 potato cut into cubes
1 carrot chopped
1/2 cup fresh green peas
Salt to taste
Chopped coriander leaves for garnishing
For the tadka:
3 tsp ghee
4 finely chopped garlic cloves
1/2 tsp red chilli powder
Procedure
Wash rice and chana dal and soak in water separately for 30 mins.
In a pressure cooker put oil, add curry leaves, slit green chillies and saute for a second.
Add chopped onions, and red chillies and fry for 5 minutes. Add turmeric powder, chopped ginger, and garlic, and fry for 2 minutes.
Now tip in the chopped tomatoes and cook till tomatoes are mushy. Add the chopped potato, carrot, and green peas. Give a good mix.
Drain water from the rice and dal and add it to the cooker. Add salt to taste and fry them for 5 minutes.
Now add 3 and a half cup water and cook for 3 whistles.
Once the steam of the cooker is released, open the cooker and add chopped coriander leaves .
For the tempering, heat ghee in a pan, and put chopped garlic cloves. Once they turn golden brown add red chilli powder and immediately turn off the flame.
Put the tadka into the prepared khichdi and give a gentle mix and serve hot topped with ghee.
Enjoy hot khichdi with pickles and curds.
