Radish Leaves Pappu / Andhra style Dal

Dal is also called “Pappu” in the Telugu language. Dal is a staple in Indian homes and there are many variations of making dal which vary from state to state as well as from home to home. You can use any green leafy vegetables to make this dal.


Ingredients


1cup Toor dal

1.25 cups water to cook dal

2 cups finely chopped tender radish leaves

1 large onion thinly sliced

1 chopped tomato

1/2 tsp red chilli powder

Chopped coriander leaves

Salt to taste


For the tempering:

4tsp ghee

1 tsp mustard

1/2 tsp jeera

curry leaves

Pinch of Hing

1 tsp turmeric powder/ Haldi

5-6 Methi seeds

1 broken red chilli

5-6 crushed garlic cloves


Procedure


  • Pressure cook dal and radish leaves with water for 2-3 whistles, once the pressure releases mash it well

  • Soak tamarind in water

  • Heat ghee in a vessel add mustard when it starts crackling add Hing, methi seeds, jeera and red chilli

  • Add onions and saute till they are half done

  • Add chopped tomatoes, green chillies, turmeric powder and salt

  • Saute till tomatoes become mushy

  • Add red chilli powder and fry for a minute

  • Add the tamarind pulp,1 cup water, once it starts boiling add mashed dal and greens adjust the salt

  • Bring it to boil and simmer for 2 mins

  • Add coriander leaves and serve hot with rice, ghee and papad.
