Dal is called Pappu in Telugu. This Dal is a mild, slightly tangy and comforting Dal which goes best with steamed rice topped with some ghee.
Ingredients
1 cup toor dal/split pigeon peas
4 ripe tomatoes
1 tsp mustard
1 small onion chopped
2 slit green chillies
10 curry leaves
6 chopped garlic cloves
1 tsp cumin seeds/ jeera
1 tsp red chilli powder
1/2 tsp turmeric / Haldi powder
2 whole dry red chillies
5 tsp oil
Chopped coriander leaves
Procedure
Wash and cook the tur dal, with 3 chopped tomatoes in a pressure cooker upto 2 -3 whistles and switch off the flame. Allow the pressure to release by itself.
Meanwhile, heat oil in a deep pan, put mustard, once it crackles add curry leaves, garlic, onion, saute till it turns transparent.
Add chopped one tomato, turmeric, half of the red chilli powder and green chillies.
Cook all the ingredients for 2 minutes, then reduce to low heat and let it simmer, stirring at regular intervals.
Now add the mashed tur dal, and let it simmer.
To prepare the tempering, heat ghee in the frying pan, add mustard and cumin seeds, stir on medium heat until they splutter, add garlic and remaining red chilli powder stir for a second and turn off the flame
Now pour the tempering over the simmering dal.
Remove from the heat and serve hot with rice.
