Thatte idli is very soft n spongy idli that is very popular in Karnataka. In Kannada Thatte means plate...So if you dont have thatte idli stand then steam it in any deep round steel plates. Enjoy these idlis with sambar or coconut chutney.
Ingredients
1 cup whole urad dal
3 cups idli rice
1 cup cooked rice
1 cup poha(beaten rice)
Salt to taste
For the sambar:
1cup boiled toor dal
1/2 cup shallots/ sambar onion
1 chopped tomato
1 cubed potato
3 tsp sambar pdr
Salt to taste
Chopped coriander leaves
For the tempering:
2 tsp oil
1 tsp mustard
curry leaves
1/2 tsp asafoetida powder
Procedure
To make idli soak urad dal and rice separately in water for 5-6 hrs
Grind dal into a fine paste, in a grinder
Grind rice in the mixer with poha and cooked rice (keep it lil coarse)
Mix both the batters and keep overnight for fermentation
Next day morning add salt to taste and steam the idlis in thatte idli moulds for 15-20 mins
Serve hot with sambar or chutney.
To make sambar peel the onions and saute in 2 tsp oil with a little salt, till it is cooked and becomes light brown
Cook the tomato, potato in cooker with dal for 2 whistles
Transfer it to a vessel, add onions, salt and water to adjust the consistency
Add sambar powder and make it boil
Add the tempering with the mentioned ingredients, garnish with the chopped coriander leaves.
